Creative Gift Giving

Posted by: | Comments (1)

I love to think outside of the box when it comes to gift giving.  I’m not a fan of running to the mall to pick something up, and you certainly won’t find me shopping on Black Friday.  I enjoy taking great care in considering the recipient and finding something that they will really use and/or enjoy.  I also believe that by really considering the recipient, your likelihood  of just adding to the “stuff” and “clutter” is greatly diminished.

I’d like to share one of my Christmas gift ideas that I’m giving this year and hope you’ll find some inspiration for your own holiday giving.

This idea is for my stepdad, so if you know him….shhhhh.  He is a great guy that does not really “need” anything.  He was born in 1937 and I thought it might be fun to create a gift with a theme around the year he was born.

I began with an amazing service, Find a Birthdate.  They have a comprehensive collection of more than 55 years of Life Magazines.  Simply select an issue, date, or interest, and they’ll find a match.  I selected an issue from the week my stepfather was born.  The process was easy, (an actual phone call with Sy, a most fabulous guy) and I had the magazine within a week.  Another reason I love this option is because I enjoy frequenting and supporting small businesses.

Next I went to a movie database and found one of the most popular flicks from 1937 and ordered via Amazon.

Last but not least, I did a search for music collections from 1937.  I was able to find an entire collection of music from that year on Amazon.

Yes, it takes a little work but I know he will appreciate it.  The gift is something he would never think to do by himself and it has meaning.  I would absolutely love to hear some of your creative ideas for meaningful gift giving, so please share them!

I’ve featured the modular hauler before, but I’m using yet AGAIN on vacation and I’m still finding new ways to use it.

The Modular Hauler features separate zippered compartments to store…well.. anything and everything.

Our vacation this year was a road trip and I packed a compartment for each of my kids with their clothing and one for shoes and toys.  We stayed at multiple locations, so upon arrival I gave them their cube and they unpacked.  I could then use the emptied cube for grocery shopping, the beach, laundry, day trips and various other errands.  They are incredibly versatile, durable and sturdy.

I’ve also used them to pack for air travel.  Simply pack each cube and then toss in a duffel bag.  At the end of your journey the clothing is already separated and easy to find.

We’ve had ours for about seven years and I can tell you that it has been worth the investment.  I have not been paid a dime to write any of this – I just love the product.  I’ve linked to it via the Container Store below, but you can also find it at a number of other places, including Amazon.com.

Perfectly Savvy Finds

Hi everyone – Amanda from Confessions of a Wannabe Supermom was kind enough to guest post earlier this week as part of my new Savory Solutions series.  She shared an organizing tip that she uses in her own home to prep outfits for the week in her kids’ closets.  Your Savvy Find this week features some closet organizers that could be used to separate each outfit by day and make getting dressed in the morning a stress free event.  You could use the cubbies that hang in the closet, or just a simple divider in between each outfit.  Happy Organizing!

My Savvy Finds this week are completely selfish because it is on my weekend project list and I needed ideas.  I love to wear scarves in the fall and winter.  The easy option (included below) of a hanger with holes won’t work because some of them are too bulky.  However I did spy the option with rather large holder at Amazon and that would work.  I am considering a towel bar because I could loop the scarf, give it a quick tie and it would stay nicely.  I’ll let you know what I come up with!  Have a great weekend.

This week I’m asking you to take a look at your bedroom.  Of all the rooms in your home, the bedroom should be a haven or place of calm and rest.  One easy way to achieve this is to reduce the clutter.  Begin this weekend by cleaning and clearing out your bedside table or nightstand.  I love the look of a nightstand with only one drawer and very limited items.  Lamp, book, clock, candle and lotion.  What else to you need before you go to bed?  Take a look at some of these fun options, especially the wall mounted version from Ikea – very clever and cool.

Friday's Perfectly Savvy Finds

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Welcome back to the second installment of Perfectly Savvy Finds, the new weekly feature that allows me to find cool things and share them with you.

Today I’ve selected a theme for my Savvy Finds - CLOSET HELPERS.

First on the list is an amazing little prefab system from Rubbermaid that I found on Amazon.  This looks like a less expensive version of the Elfa closets and might be a great solution for an apartment or area that does not need custom measurements.

Next on my list is this handy little pantry helper found on Organize-It that simply fastens on the back of a door.  The FreedomRail would also be perfect in an apartment or home where you need flexibility or the option to move it down the road.  There are various bin sizes and I believe that Elfa also has a version should you want a higher end solution.

Our last closet helper today is a hanging accessory bag.  I’ve been using a sweater sized hanging bag for purses, scarves and other accessories but I just noticed this online and I think the size and scale would work much better.  This particular bag can be found at the Container Store - also known as my Zen Place.
