Clean & Organized Makeup

Posted by: | Comments (3)

Spring cleaning is just around the corner, but there are a few things that you can get do to get a jump start on the process.  Begin now by weeding through all of your cosmetics and toiletries.  Pay particular attention to make certain your makeup brushes are either cleaned properly or replaced.  Makeup can be germ central, so give it a good cleaning.

1.  Brushes need to be cleaned or replaced.  I like to use I.D. Well cared for by Bare Escentuals once per month, (link below).  You can also use any mild detergent on a good brush.

2.  Basic guidelines say that powders can be good up to 2 years.  Lipsticks 1-2 years but if it smells funny or rancid – toss it.  If you use a foundation then it probably won’t last more than 18 months.  Pencils and liners last  3 years if you sharpen them regularly.  Mascara needs to be rotated out about every 4 months.  Nail polish should last about a year.

3.  If you haven’t used it recently then you probably won’t – so let it go!

4.  I found a great resource for homemade brush cleaners and brush tips on Tipnut.

Hi Everyone,

‘Tis the season for catalog and magazine delivery.  I urge you NOW to streamline your process for handling catalogs so that you are not receiving copies that you don’t want.  It adds to the clutter and is a waste of materials.

1.  Call and remove yourself from mailing lists if you don’t look at.  Yes it takes time, but consider it your duty to help protect the environment.

2.  Alternatively you can use a FREE service like Catalog Choice.  I’ve used this for a number of years and it is easy.  It will work for a large number of publications.

3.  Come up with a plan of how you will recycle the catalogs.  I still receive a few from stores that I frequent.  The girls and I like to sit together and “dream shop”.  I have a magazine caddy and they go there for a period of time.  After that I weed through and recycle.  Have a specific location for the catalogs so that they are not all over the house and don’t allow for major expansion.  Decide on an amount of space for the catalogs and stick to it!

Oh, how I love a good sale.  This week your Savvy Finds are furniture items ON SALE that can help you organize your space.  I recently purchased the leaning bookcase at the Container Store and I can’t wait to put it together.  Of course I can’t guarantee the sale price – so “get ‘em while they’re hot”.  Have a great weekend.

He Everyone,

As promised, I’m giving you some ideas/inspiration for a homework station.  Remember that the idea is to give your kids an EASY place to put their papers when they arrive home and empty their backpacks.  Then, after they’ve relaxed and had a little snack you can go through everything with them.  Or, if it is a busy day of afterschool activities, the papers will all be waiting.  You can color code, label or personalize the bins to make them more fun.  Just remember to keep it easy to use!  By using a system like this, you will be teaching your kids basic organizing skills;  everything has a home, sorting, routine and taking ownership of a task.

Hi Everyone,

It is that time of year again when we start thinking about heading back to school.  Do yourself a favor and knock a couple of organizing projects out of the park before the year begins.  Speaking of knocking it out of the park, let’s look at organizing sports equipment.  I’ve got some great little helpers below to try to tame the clutter of all that gear.  I also want you to consider how you will take the gear from car to home.  I’ve included two ideas for you.  Consider a tote bag for each member of the family.  The x-large sizes are quite roomy.  Everyone can toss their gear in after the game and you can tote it to the house for cleaning.  After uniforms and equipment are cleaned and ready, pack them again for a trip to the car.  The modular hauler is just plain handy.  Use it for sports and summer travel. .

Hi Savvy Friends,

I’m going to throw a little zest into your weekend with some Perfectly Savvy spice holders.  I’ve focused my search on spice racks that are also space savers.  I have the Rubbermaid pull-down rack and LOVE it but the easel version from Bed, Bath and Beyond is very sleek.

Find a new spice rack for your kitchen just in time for all of the 4th of July grilling this weekend.  Happy shopping and Happy Fourth!
