Perfectly Savvy Finds
Posted by: | CommentsYour Savvy Find this week is a website that I “Stumbled Upon”. My husband will probably NOT be happy that I’ve found the Family Handman. There are a number of DIY projects on the site that have my head spinning with ideas. The site has everything from kitchen organization ideas to repair and maintenance. Right now I’m LOVING the tiles underneath the kitchen sink. Simple, brilliant and it of course never crossed my mind. Make certain to check out his ideas for tool storage – there is a Father’s Day idea in there somewhere even if it is a subscription to the magazine. I hope you enjoy the site – let me know what project it inspires in your home.
What’s the Secret?
Posted by: | CommentsWhenever I’m asked about my business, I always receive a comment such as, oh, your house must be so organized or how do I begin? Here’s a big secret…. PURGE. Even though my home may be well organized, I still have to go through drawers, closets, cupboards and cabinets periodically to clean and purge.
I spent part of the day working with my girls yesterday and I was really pleased to see that they were making great decisions on their own. I have been working on sorting and organizing with them so that they can clean and maintain their room on their own. Do they need my help? Yes! However, they are doing quite well on their own. It was also fun. Giggles were high on the list and no frustration allowed.
1. We sorted doll clothes and they were able to donate a number of items. They also worked on making certain all the shoes had a partner, accessories were together and the system made sense to THEM. If kids don’t understand how things are organized or categorized, then they won’t be able to help maintain.
2. I asked them to donate two stuffed toys each, and they produced about 6 each.
3. They understood that to make room for all the new toys, they needed to release some of the old.
I also worked in my kitchen. I went through each drawer and cupboard to purge and clean. Items accumulate and the big secret is that you need to find the time to weed through it. Some quick tips for the kitchen:
1. Utilize glass and transparent containers instead of the original packaging. Your cabinets will look more cohesive and you can see how much product is left.
2. Drawer organizers make a huge difference. Keep like utensils together and purge gadgets that you do not use.
3. Try to keep your countertops clear of clutter.
4. For tips on your fridge, see my post from last year.
5. Don’t overbuy!
Schedule some time in your calendar this week for a little organizing maintenance and see what you can accomplish.
Perfectly Savvy Finds
Posted by: | CommentsI find myself in the kitchen A LOT this time of year. Cooking, baking and appetizers galore. I love having spatulas, whisks, spoons and other essentials on the countertop and easy to grab. The utensil holder has really come a long way. There are a variety of options for every kind of cook and every kind of kitchen. A utensil holder stocked with a few goodies such as spatulas, pot holders, olive oil or holiday towels would make a great gift.

Posted by: | CommentsIf you have a need for a little bill pay or laptop docking station in your home, then this is the post for you! My Perfectly Savvy Finds this week feature space-saving desk areas that can provide a small work area in high traffic or small spaces. I am particularly fond of the wall mounted options. They are fantastic solutions for those that can keep the paper clutter to a minimum. We use the very inexpensive wall mounted shelf from Ikea as a study nook for our oldest daughter. We were able to tuck it in a quiet little space so that she has a place to relax and focus while working. I am in love with the fold out convertible desk listed on Amazon. A wonderful solution for small spaces – even dorm rooms. With a couple of folding chairs this could also double as a small table for an eat in kitchen. The leaning bookcase at Bed, Bath and Beyond would be perfect in a kitchen area. Picture a laptop on the desk area and cookbooks lining the top shelves. The leaning bookcase could also be used in a dorm.
Please make certain to join me next week – I have a wonderful new post to share with you that involves saving money – as a family project.
Cleaning – Quick tips for the week
Posted by: | CommentsI do NOT have a perfect home. I’m a mom, business owner and all around busy girl. However, I have a few quick cleaning routines that give me a sense of peace throughout the week. Yours might be different than mine. They key is to determine what must be clean and done in YOUR home in order to stay in charge and keep your home in order.
Here are my quick cleaning bursts for each day that help me keep my home in order:
1. I put one load of laundry in each morning.
2. My bathrooms and kitchen get wiped down EVERY day. I use Method multi-surface with lavender.
3. Hardwood floors get a quick once over in high traffic areas with a microfiber mop. It is so quick and easy to do. I just spray the microfiber cloth with a vinegar solution and give a pass over high traffic areas, under my dining room table (to catch the extra crumbs) and in the kitchen. The microfiber picks up just about everything.
4. I have a handy little cordless stick vacuum that will pick up hair on the bathroom floor and is great for a quick zoom on my carpets.
These quick little cleaning bursts help me stay on top of the brewing chaos and help to give me a sense of calm about my home.
What are your “cleaning must-dos” for the week?
