End Table DIY

Posted by: | Comments (2)

I hope you don’t mind if I share a little DIY project today.  I have two end tables that I love…no hate….no love…no hate.  Okay, let’s clarify;  I love the shape, size and the way it functions in my small space.  I hate the scratched and boring top.

Our little DIY project was very simple and it cost absolutely nothing.  I found some old calendars that we used for art around the house and my hubby cut them to fit the table top.   A little glue and Modge Podge later…. Well, let me know what you think.  We love the change and it really helps to brighten the room.  It also makes the first cup of coffee in the morning just a little happier.

Holiday greeting cards – to send or not to send, that is the question.  Many people have stopped sending the annual holiday card for some very noble reasons.  I’m usually first on board to streamline and simplify, but admittedly not when it comes to the holiday cards.  I really enjoy receiving them.  I love receiving a card from family that I rarely see or just the excitement of getting a beautiful card in the mail around the holidays.

I save the cards for one year, packing them away with my decorations.  I pull them out the following year when we put up the decorations and go through them once before tossing them aside.  I sat with my girls today and we went through all of our cards from last year and it was really special.  I also keep one of our family cards with the decorations so the girls can go through and see how they’ve changed from year to year.

I completely understand why some choose to no longer send the cards, I just want you to know that I miss receiving them.  I miss your updates and seeing your beautiful families.  I still love the idea and the sentiment behind them.

How do you feel about it?

Inspiration

Sometimes we all need a little inspiration to move forward.  I’ve been a little bogged down with work, (a good problem to have) but I took some time today to find a little organizing zen.  I hope you enjoy my out of the box DIY finds too.

Your Savvy Find today is courtesy of Netted by the Webbys and a recent post they did about FastCustomer.  FastCustomer is an app that you can download to your Iphone or Android phone that will with one tap, find you an actual customer service rep at over 2,000 companies.  That’s right, AN ACUTAL REPRESENTATIVE, a REAL LIVE PERSON.  Genius.

Perfectly Savvy Finds

I have two savvy finds for you today but both with the same purpose, to eliminate junk mail.

The first, 41 Pounds, stops your junk mail and catalogs for a fee of 41 dollars, (it covers you for 5 years).  $15 of the $41.00 goes to a charity that you choose from their site and then they do the work of contacting various mail services to remove your address.  They will also contact magazines and other bulk mailers on your behalf.  I’ve heard great things about this service.

The next site, Catalog Choice, is a free service but the user has to do more of the work to remove unwanted mail.  I’ve used this service and did find it easy but it does take a little time and effort.  My junk mail was significantly reduced.

Two great options so that you can do your part to reduce the amount of paper and junk that clutters your home and our environment.

‘Tis the Season to Overcommit

Posted by: | Comments (0)

My post today is a result of me not following my own advice.  My heart is in the right place, I want to be a “good mom” and right now I’m afraid that my good intentions might backfire.  I’ve volunteered to help with MULTIPLE events not including all of my business commitments and I see our calendar filling to the brim over the next month.  My stress level has increased and I’m left wondering how I will juggle it all while still maintaining my sanity.  Today I need to take a step back and figure out how to make it all work.  Here are some suggestions so that you can avoid my path;

1.  I’m afraid that others won’t help so I need to jump right in.  Stepping back and waiting a week  to let others have an opportunity is not a bad idea.  Some people only check email once a week, or they need to juggle other commitments.  If your plate is already quite full, wait until the last minute and then if help is still needed and you can make it work, go ahead.  Remember that not everyone processes email or requests with hyper-speed.

2.  Volunteering for everything does not make you a “good mom”.  Being invested, interested and sane will probably do the trick.  Of course you need to step up and do your part, but within reason.  Is it really worth being volunteer of the year if you are stressed out at home or around your kids?

3.  Share the volunteer opportunity with someone.  Be okay with not handling the entire event or activity and spread out the work load.

4.  Ask another adult that hasn’t helped if they’d like an opportunity to jump in.  If you’ve already accepted the volunteer job, asking someone to help you out might be the answer.  Relinquish some control to gain some sanity.

5.  Get help.  Take a look at your calendar and get help if you need it.  That’s on my to do list today.  A little babysitting boost will help me keep my sanity.

6.  Take a deep breath.  In the end, it will all work out and hopefully a lesson will be learned.  Until next year that is….

I am a work in progress too.  I am confident that I have the tools to make it through and so I’m dusting myself off and getting to work.

Please stop back on Friday because I have some Savvy Finds that will make perfect gifts over the holidays.

Perfectly Savvy Finds

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Happy Friday my Savvy Friends.  Your Savvy Finds today feature one of my favorite organizing tools – the lazy susan.  I’ve been on the hunt for a new lazy susan for my dining room table and I ended up with a beautiful wine barrel LS from Orvis.  It is beautiful on my table and adds tons of functionality.  I LOVE IT.  A lazy susan can be helpful in many areas of your home;

  • Use in your fridge for condiments and other items.  (see my post on fridge organization)
  • Use in kitchen cupboards to increase space and access.
  • Use on the kitchen counter to increase space and ease of access.
  • Use in a bathroom closet for lotions, shampoo and other toiletries.
  • Use when entertaining for easy access to appetizers.
  • Use on a dresser to organize jewelry containers and other items.

Let me know if you have any other great uses for a Lazy Susan.  Have a wonderful weekend!
