Perfectly Savvy Finds
Posted by: | CommentsI found this Savvy Find while reading through daily tips and finds on the Facebook page for Ducks in a Row, (Helane finds some great things and give good tips by the way so click on over). I just think it is a brilliant solution for storing board games AND decorating a kid friendly space.
Beckie at Infarrantly Creative came up with the idea of mounting game boards in frames and then hanging them on the wall = brilliant. Simply take them down when you want to play. She even suggest storing the game pieces on the back of the framed board in a baggie. So incredibly clever. Head on over to check it out.
End Table DIY
Posted by: | CommentsI hope you don’t mind if I share a little DIY project today. I have two end tables that I love…no hate….no love…no hate. Okay, let’s clarify; I love the shape, size and the way it functions in my small space. I hate the scratched and boring top.
Our little DIY project was very simple and it cost absolutely nothing. I found some old calendars that we used for art around the house and my hubby cut them to fit the table top. A little glue and Modge Podge later…. Well, let me know what you think. We love the change and it really helps to brighten the room. It also makes the first cup of coffee in the morning just a little happier.
Recipe Review – Cauliflower Soup
Posted by: | CommentsI stumbled upon a recipe for cauliflower soup that was so simple it made me skeptical. I looked at a number of cauliflower soup recipes, some with cheese or thyme and multiple ingredients, but because I’m all about simple solutions….
This beautiful soup via Paul Bertolli is simply delicious. The vegetable really shines and it is just a lovely way to warm up. Cauliflower is a super vegetable because it is loaded with vitamin C, K and dietary fiber.
Follow the advice of all the readers and don’t get fancy. I did substitute in a little broth for the water and I used an immersion blender instead of blending in batches. I think I might try a little crumbled bacon on the top the next time I make it.
Try a bowl and let me know what you think.
6 Simple Ideas for a Clean Under Control Holiday
Posted by: | CommentsIf you feel overwhelmed by holiday decorations and the extra work involved, take a deep breath and use some simple strategies to stay in control. Your home can still stay clean and sane even with the holiday decor in place. Here are 6 quick tips for keeping the holiday decor under control for a clean manageable home:
- Decorating for the holidays does not mean tchatchkes need to explode all over your home. If time is in short supply then limit the number of decorations that you put up. More is not always better.
- If you purchase a new decoration then recycle an old one. This is an important but simple strategy to keep from accumulating too many decorations.
- Group decorations in areas. For example – a cluster of Santa figures can not only make a cute display, it also make the set up and take down faster.
- Focus on the decorations that have family meaning. An ornament tree that has a collection of ornaments from over the years is a great way to share memories with your kids. It also keeps ornaments in one central spot instead a spread all over the house.
- If you have a live tree, then keep a routine. Check the tree each day for water levels and use a small vac to get rid of the needles.
- Take ten minutes each morning to run a vacuum through the house and/or a quick microfiber mop in high traffic areas. A quick dust twice a week will keep the dust bunnies away.

Using trays is a great way to easily move decor around so that you can easily clean/dust underneath. Check out this wonderful display via The House of Smiths for inspiration.

Perfectly Savvy Finds – Whole Foods Hand Soap
Posted by: | CommentsNot everyone gets excited about finding a great hand soap. Call me crazy, but do it on your way to Whole Foods to pick up their 365 Everyday Value Foaming Hand Soap. I prefer the Lavender scent (it just makes me happy). The substantial container means that it lasts for quite a while. I’m hoping they’ll come up with a refill so that it becomes more eco-friendly.
Try it and let me know what you think.
Thankful Tree
Posted by: | CommentsI love the holiday season, but it seems like every year the stores begin pushing the holiday “junk” even earlier than the year before. I want my girls to receive a different message. I don’t want them to think about what they want, I want them to be thankful for what they have.
I believe that an easy way to begin and continue that conversation is to place a thankful tree on the dining room table. I let the girls come up with their own ideas, cross my fingers and hope for the best. This is a great year for our little thankful tree. My youngest has graduated from being thankful for coffee cake last year, to being thankful for grandma, her sister and mom & dad this year. Progress!
I’ve created a Pinterest page with many fabulous thankful trees. Please stop by and find a little inspiration to create your own. I’d love to hear about some of your traditions heading into the holiday season, so please share them.

Perfectly Savvy Finds – Wine Cubes
Posted by: | CommentsI came across this Savvy Find and had to share it with all of you. Sometimes I’ll have just a bit of wine leftover and I’ve wanted a way to save it for cooking. I stumbled across wine cubes and then found a few sites to support it. I wasn’t certain that they’d freeze because of the alcohol content, but it looks like it will work. I’m going to begin freezing a little wine and a little stock so that I’ll have them handy when I’m cooking. Here are a few sites about freezing wine, stock or other cooking essentials;
Frugaller has 5 Frugal Freezer Tips
Sigmund, Carl & Alfred have a ton of crazy tips including wine ice cubes
Vist the Greenists for tips on Wine Ice Cubes
Summer tip for keeping whites cold on Simply Recipes
About.com has a link with measuring equivalents for the wine and stock (numbers 5 & 6)
Of course, this is assuming you’ll have any wine leftover…..
Have a great weekend!

Organizing Kids Clothing
Posted by: | CommentsOrganizing and maintaining kids clothing does not have to be nightmare. Taking some thoughtful time to consider the child and the space can help set the stage. Finding easy solutions so that they can help maintain their space will give them a sense of accomplishment but also cut down on the frustration of trying to find clothes in the morning.
I know that in my home it is not realistic to ask my Girls to fold their things in a way that will lie nicely in a drawer and not look cluttered or messy. Instead, I’ve set their dressers up so that they are easy to maintain with minimal folding involved. They are able to put away and find their clothing on their own and that save me time and frustration.
Here are a few tips and tricks;
1. Utilize small bins with handles for socks, underwear and other small items. There is no need to fold and they are easily accessed. They also look neat a clean. Add a cute label to make if fun for the kids.
2. Separate long and short sleeved shirts in containers by color. This way they won’t have to dig for what they need. It will be easily visible.
3. Don’t overstuff – weed through the clothes every two to three months and pull things that don’t fit. Only keep what you need in the closet and keep clothes that are out of season or too big in plastic totes. Rotate the clothes in/out as needed.
4. Keep a few outfits matched together in reach for 3 or 4 year olds and they can get dressed themselves. Put the outfit together when you put the laundry away and that will save you the step of picking out clothes each morning.
5. Keep sports or activity clothing together in one bin. For example, if your child takes a dance class then keep the leotard, tights and shoes together so they can get ready and pack on their own.
6. Minimize clothes on hangers. For young kids it can be difficult to reach the hangers and frustrating to use them.
The Perfect Hanger
Posted by: | CommentsI just performed a little closet face-lift and I couldn’t be more pleased. My closet was not in bad shape. I had all of my clothes relatively organized. All of my sweaters, tops and blouses were arranged by color and very easy to find. However, I still had the clunky white plastic hangers and so it just always looked messy to me. I’ve had my sights set on these little Huggable Hangers from the Container Store, but they seemed a little pricey. I found a very similar hanger at HomeGoods and they were less expensive. I’m thrilled. An inexpensive way to spruce up my closet. Believe it or not, I created more room by just changing out the hangers and the uniform look that it gives really makes my closet look more organized.
